Austin has a long history with cooperatives of all types. The earliest known reference is worker co-op of Austin carpenters from 1893. The earliest housing cooperative was a student housing co-op at the University of Texas called Halstead, founded in 1936. Today Austin and central Texas are home to a variety of cooperatives, in everything from housing to brewing, web development to taxi services.
